Oh, what to write. I promised my bff I would write a blog so she could peek in on my life since we live I don’t know how many miles but something like 5.5 hours with the GIANT state of Kentucky between us. Why does it feel like you can barely escape the clutches of KY when driving through??
At any rate, today has been a little rough as I had 3 Jack and diets last night followed by a stop to Whitey’s ending much later than anticipated because of the time change. I also seem to have picked up the cold that has been going around and have to do that stupid breathe out my mouth because my nose is super stuffed up. It was so beautiful yesterday. I think it got up in the 70s- but today we are cloudy, hazy and at best in the high 50s. I’ve got a wicked 10 page historiographical review on the Annales school due in the next few days and more than enough reading material to write it. What I don’t have is the motivation. I’ve managed to do many other things in the last few days, however, while avoiding this paper such as: alphabeticizing all of our dvds, laundry, ordering more books from the library than I can pick up in a trip by myself, and lastly revisting Tori (hence the blog title). For Whitney, Marah is her musical love affair, for me it has and always will be Tori. Tori and I have been aquainted since I was 7 and first heard Little Earthquakes- but it wasn’t until I was about 12 or 13 that I actually started listening to her more closely, and not until 16 that I decided she would be a musical savior for me. With Tori I survived high school, undergraduate, and now I’m relying on her wisdom and sage-like abilities to survive grad school. I’ve heard she’s got a new album out, I’d like to check it out but really everything up to Scarlet’s will always be the dearest to me.
Låt den rätte komma in
We saw this Swedish film, translated to Let the Right One In, last night with our friends Aliya and Lisa. It was a suspenseful and eerie film but sweet in many ways- not at all what you think of when you hear about a vampire movie. It is sort of an ambiguous love story between Oskar, an awkward and bullied 12 year old and Eli the dark-haired vampire beauty. Overall I liked the film, some parts were a little under-developed but all in all it was a high intensity film that ended just the way I wanted it to. When I got up this morning and started looking into the details that were a little unclear to me, I discovered there is an American remake in order for January 2010 and honestly I have no idea how this film will translate to American audiences… the sexual ambiguity alone will not satisfy the general American audience- but also the lack of total gore in the original which will surely find its way into the American remake will dramatically alter the mood of the film. Several years ago one of my favorite Norwegian/Swedish films, Insomnia, starring Stellan Skarsgård, was remade starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams. It was very disappointing and didn’t contain the tensity or tonality of the original. I do hope that the remake of Let the Right One In, set to be directed by Matt Reeves, does some justice to the story.
